We Are in Contact with a Church Congregation in Puerto Rico

We have been in contact with a deacon at a congregation in Puerto Rico that we worked with back in 2017, to find out the extent of the damages they’ve received from Hurricane Fiona. The Category 1 storm made landfall Sunday afternoon, Sept 18th, about 3:20pm Eastern time, with sustained winds of 86mph. The whole island lost power early Sunday, before Hurricane Fiona made landfall.

Five years ago, in 2017, Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico. This storm was not as bad as Maria, but they have received 24” of rain in 24hrs, and the storm has been the cause for 2 deaths, one was a 58 year old man that was washed away by the rushing river waters, and second was a 30 year old man killed in a generator related fire. Without power and with many communication lines down, the churches around the island have not been able to contact each other yet, so they are hoping to learn more about the level of damages the next few days. 600 National Guard soldiers are conducting search and rescue operations, already rescuing about 1,000, and the Red Cross has opened up about 100 shelters across the island. We are standing by while they assess the damages and the needs, to see how we can help.

The island of Puerto Rico is about 110 miles East to West, and 40 miles North to South, with about 3.3 million residents.

When we know more, we will post it here. Please keep the families in Puerto Rico in your prayers.
