First Shipment of Supplies Requested after Hurricane Helene Comes Ashore
Today we received our first request for a shipment of supplies to be delivered to the Forest Park Church of Christ in Valdosta, Georgia, at 1pm on Sunday.
Helene was a category 4 hurricane as the storm hit the Big Bend area of Florida, and remained a hurricane as it passed into Georgia. We know many communities in the path of the storm are still assessing damage, and are still in search and rescue mode. With as much wind and rain damage as caused, it may be a few days before others ask for our help.
Hurricane Idalia hit the Big Bend area of Florida in August of 2023. At that time we helped the Cedar Key Church of Christ on Cedar Key Island. Our Associate Director covering the southeast, Ken Lowry, received a text message today from the minister at the Cedar Key church. “The destruction is far worse than last year’s Idalia. About a dozen homes are flattened or gone. Debris is everywhere (at least twice that of last year). The only road to the island is still closed, with all of the debris and downed trees. Nobody is allowed to go in yet.”
The minister in Perry, Florida, (10 miles from the point of landfall) said they are still just trying to assess the damage. They most likely will need a truckload of supplies. Others are expressing the same.
This afternoon storms and tornadoes were occurring in North Carolina. There is extensive flooding in Asheville, NC. Over 40 fatalities now reported.
As we get more requests for help, we will let you know. Please be praying for all of the families affected by these storms. Thank you for your support, and your prayers for this work!
