Two massive forest fires in Colorado and New Mexico have destroyed hundreds of homes and threaten thousands of people, livestock and wildlife. Nineteen other large wildfires are being battled by thousands of firefigheters in nine states.
The Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, Inc. has sent trucks to Colorado and New Mexico and calls for help continue to pour in. A mild winter, low snow pack and pine trees destroyed by the pine beetle have created tinder dry conditions throughout the West.
Federal and state firefighters, tanker planes and helicopters are stretched thin and I fear we will be soon unless we get some extra funds to buy the necessary supplies so desperately needed out there. Forecasts and weather conditions call for an explosive summer of fires throughout the West.
Please consider sending us as much as you can comfortably afford whether that’s $10, $20, $50, $100 or more. We will put it to good use as we have for the last 21 years.
Please take action immediately by sending a check or calling us toll-free at 1-888-541-2848 for credit card donations. As of this writing, the huge fire in Colorado scorched 73 square miles and the New Mexico fire had burned more than 58 square miles. More than 2,000 firefighters and the bulk of the nation’s heavy air tankers have done little to stop these infernos.
With many thanks,
Joe L. Dudney
